An experimental film about the interpenetration of various levels of communication, dealing with the relationship of the pictorial functions to those of sound (direct sound).

"…What sounds rather bookish and intimidating, in fact unfolds an enormous sensual stimulus on screen. In more than 20 sequences, based in part on work by Stifter and Camus, Hamburg's experimental film director and a number of students from Braunschweig and Göttingen demonstrate a higher school of hearing and seeing. With manipulations of sight and sound, which are at times highly complex and mathematically precise, he shows the tension between optical and acoustic elements, inventing ever new combinations from which an abstract poetry issues forth. Nekes works with single frame mechanism and multiple copying of the images, thus defamiliarizing the sound at the same time. The title of the film pertains to Jonathan Swift's 'Gulliver's Travels'. Lagado is the name of the academy in which scientists of the most diverse disciplines work at strange projects.” (Hans C. Blumenberg, Die Zeit, March 18, 1977 Filmtip “Excellent”).

Werner Nekes - JOHNNY FLASH, 1986 (video excerpt):

Experimental filmmaker Werner Nekes describes in this, his first comedy the extraordinary career of the pop king of the Ruhr, „Johnny Flash“. This obstinate offspring of the Potzkothen family succeeds in becoming, thanks to the unflagging support of his mother, his manager and „that girl at Music Satellite“ a celebrated pop star. In the final sequence of this satire on show business and mother-son-love, Johnny and his mama wander off into an uncertain horizon, just as Charlie Chaplin once did at the end of his films ...

Contains:
QUIXOTE
Bruce Baillie's (…) Quixote (1965) stands alongside other synoptic 60s masterpieces such as Stan Brakhage's The Art of Vision and Peter Kubelka's Unsere Afrikareise, which use dense collages of diverse images in an attempt to make sense of a troubling world. In Quixote wild horses and a basketball game are part of a cross-country trip that ends with an antiwar demonstration in Manhattan. Baillie says he's depicting our culture as one of conquest, but his film's greatness lies not in its social analysis, which can seem as simpleminded as equating businessmen with pigs. Rather it's in the way his superimposed and intercut images float almost weightlessly in space, creating a hypnotic sense of displacement that lets us see beyond aggression.

BRUCE BAILLIE - VOLUME 3(75,00 euros)
Contains:
QUICK BILLY, the experience of transformation between life and death, death and birth, or rebirth in four reels.

DVD CLAUDE BOSSION - NY MEMORIES

CLAUDE BOSSION

New York Memories
1999 - France - 47 minutes - Super 8 mm
(DVD PAL - Ed. CIRCUIT COURT) 15,00 euros

Claude Bossion

Claude Bossion - New York Memories, 1999 (video excerpt):

On analysis this film seems to be an experiment on collective memory and an inner dialogue by the film-maker : what is filming? What is a film-maker? By trying to recreate the New York memories of seven characters, Claude Bossion searches for the profound meaning of his "art" or rather of its cinematographic posture. Setting out to look for the friends or acquaintances of his accomplices, he finds himself, when he gets there, attracted by other things, other people, other stories... the film is born from this... a sort of pseudo-mystical quest the quasi-archetypical and banal images of which reach a powerful level of imagination. With participation of Pierre Clémenti, Judith Malina, Jonas Mekas, Jerome Charyn.
